Seeing Red Today?

Have you seen an abundance of people wearing the color red today? It’s probably because today is National Wear Red Day! No it’s not some gimmick to pull out your Valentine’s gear early, it’s to bring awareness to the fact that heart disease the the number 1 killer of women in the United States. Shocking isn’t it! Heart disease kills 1 in 3 women whereas 1 in 30 women die of breast cancer. Today is a day we remind women of the severity of this disease and to know the risk factors and do something about it! Many of the risk factors for heart disease can be controlled or prevented, so why don’t we take more proactive steps to reduce these risks!

Risk factors for heart disease are:
-Smoking
-High blood pressure
-High blood cholesterol
-Overweight/obesity
-Physical inactivity
-Diabetes
-Family history of early coronary heart disease
-Age (for women, 55 and older)

So today is the day we take control of our health and work to reduce our risk of heart disease. Here are some great recipes that we can prepare to help protect our hearts. These look so yummy, I may have to try some this weekend! So throw on a red scarf or some red lipstick to show your support of this important day!

Thanks for posting this Jen! I’ve been spreading the word all week, got about 3/4 of my class to wear red…I’ve been on my soapbox about women and heart disease all week! Nice to see the word spread around.
