Dinner at South

Last night I had the opportunity to try out the restaurant South in North Hills. I have been dying to try this place and after a crazy day at work, I was uber excited to go. Because this place is located within a weird mall setting, parking is also weird and when you add the fact that there was a free beach music concert, parking was certainly at a premium. Though luck was on our side and we stalked a couple to their car and took their spot. Our other dinner mate was none so lucky and circled the mall for 45 minutes for a parking spot. (note to self, remember where you parked in the parking garage, particularly if you plan to drink :))

Once we all settled into our booth, I order a traditional Kentucky Mint Julep, I know it’s cheesy but I wanted the full southern experience. My tasty libation arrived in the traditional silver cup, filled with crushed ice, lots of mints and the sweeten brown goodness of bourbon, yum. I so needed that! Forget mojitos, my mint plant in the backyard is destined for this new favorite drink. While sipping my refreshing drink, we ordered fried oysters. These were fab. Lightly coated in a cornmeal crust and upon your first bite down, there is just enough crust before hitting the squishy center (yeah- I said squishy- makes you want some now huh) dipped in the spicy sauce that was not so eloquently displayed on the plate and it was a fine combo. A great start to the meal.

I ordered the Pecan Pie Salad, which should be without surprise as it included mixed greens, blue cheese, red onions, candied pecans and a brown sugar vinaigrette. Nothing spectacular but I still enjoyed it.

For my main course I ordered the catfish which was pan fried with a cornmeal crust, served with a jicama slaw, grit fries (which kinda looked like french toast sticks) and malt tartar sauce. The catfish was without bones and skin and it was absolutely fabulous. Light and flaky, it was far from what I expected in a fried catfish but it was divine. My Mom would love it. The jicama slaw was crunchy and not heavy on the sauce, quite pleasant. The grit fries were ok,I pretty much used them as a vehicle for the yummy malt tartar sauce, I would have preferred cheese grits because, well, I love cheese grits :)

Since we still had over a half bottle of 1998 Brunello to consume, dessert was ordered and since we couldn’t decide on the two suggestions by our servers, we order both. A coconut pie, that was more of a custardy circular cake with caramelized bananas, so good! Loved the crunch on the bananas. We also ordered the milk chocolate cheesecake, which was rich to say the least. I don’t know which I preferred as they were both delicious, it’s more dependent on if you like a rich decadent dessert or a lighter, cleaner dessert.

Overall, a wonderful experience, I really like this place and the novetly of the theme, it would be fun to take someone that grew up with southern food to show them a new spin on things.

Jennifer Edit: Well get in while you can, this place is closing June 7th and will be re-opened as a French restaurant. Glad I had the chance the at least try it, looks like I will have a new French place to try now :)
