Beach Preparations

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Tomorrow Evan and I are packing up the mutts and heading to the beach. I could not be more excited. I think we both need time to relax and be with each other and just…be. We are taking the jeep which means we have to be very selective of the items we bring.

I always seem to eat differently when I am at the beach, I want everything to be fresh. Not saying I don’t like things fresh the rest of the year but I want ripe cantaloupe, juicy tomatoes and fresh caught fish. So I went to the Farmer’s Market on Sunday and picked up some fruit and veggies, I have packed them carefully so as to take up less room. I have some fun fruity adult beverages that will also need a safe spot. Throw in some bathing suits and sunscreen and I’m just about ready (though knowing me I will also bring too many shirts, 4 pairs of shoes and a hair dryer but the thought is there).

I couldn’t be more excited!

Ahhh Vacation!

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Well I sincerely apologize for my lack of posting this week, I am preparing for our vacation to Utah! I know, I am leaving the 80 degree weather in NC to visit the snowy, chilly climate of Park City but we will be skiing! I am really excited to be going. I have not been west of Texas so I am pretty stoked to be checking another state off my list and experiencing some awesome mountains. This will be our anniversary trip so we are going to try and find a nice place for another “anniversary dinner”, hopefully without the sea of baby blue.

Nonetheless, I will be back next Friday though I can’t promise when I will be able to post pictures. Have a great week and cross your fingers I don’t break my leg!

Pomme Frites

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Evan has been in New York since Monday for a conference. He flew in earlier than he needed to because he wanted to do a bit of exploring. By exploring I mean eating at one of the places we have both been dreaming of, Pomme Frites. There are a few things Evan and I truly love (besides each other :))pizza, beer, ribs, and french fries. We are really picky about these things and we always try to find the best we can. Pomme Frites is almost the mecca of the french fry for those of us living in the US. I still think you can’t beat a fritz special in a market in Holland, fries smothered in their mayonnaise, curry sauce and chopped onion- delish- but I digress.

So while Evan was sending me text message with pictures of his cone of warm fries I was craving the salty crunchy fries myself, so I did the next best thing…got some Wendy’s fries and smothered them in fritessaus. Ok it probably was not the next best thing but it was as good as it got at that point. I managed to find the fry sauce that I fell in love with in Holland here at A Southern Season and am waiting for the curry sauce to come back in stock. The fritessaus is kinda like mayo but has a bit more flavor and it not as obnoxious. Give it a try if you ever see it in a store. Nonetheless I guarantee that I will be stopping by Pomme Frites to try their fries and one of their many sauces when I make it back up to NYC.

San Antonio, Texas…home of the Alamo, Riverwalk, the Spurs and my Dad’s side of the family. Evan and I are taking an extended weekend trip to visit my relatives and eat lots of barbeque and Mexican food. I can’t wait!

As an Ode to Texas I have written an article about Baby Back Ribs in June’s edition of Very Good Things which will be up tommorrow so check it out while I am gone! See you on Tuesday!

Checkin’ In from London

Sunday, March 12th, 2006

i’m not using capitals, the shift button is too hard to reach. jen and i are having a great time here in london. we arrived with no problems and everything has been good. i believe we have walked sixty-five hundred miles already and my feet are reminding me so. food is good, beer is better. thankfully, sites are not too crowded (i can’t imagine what it is like in summer time here). subway system is a big pain in my ass, but the streets are even worse, nothing is where it is supposed to be according to Rick Steves and our other maps.

all in all, doing well, miss everyone. sorry to just post here instead of emailing but internet time is limited.

cheers!

evan and jen

So Long Chaps!

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Evan and I leave for London this afternoon and we couldn’t be more excited! I have meticulously packed my rather large suitcase while Evan is just not loading up his duffle bag…yes duffle bag, he is a light packer. We have sticky-noted our large laminated map with every possible site, market, and interesting looking pub. We will certainly bring back many pictures, and I’m sure many interesting stories!

We will be back next Thursday, if we get some internet access while we are there, I will drop a line!

Cheers!

Is it time for a spot of tea?

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

I know this isn’t really food related…but I am too excited….Evan and I booked a trip to London for our one year anniversary! I am so excited, I could barely sleep Friday night after we booked it. It is on the B.K. (before kids) list of places we want to go before we start a family. Also on that list is touring New York City (to be done next September thanks to Scott and Jess’ wedding), and an African Safari hopefully to be done in 2007.

Though when we look back at our past travel adventures together, it’s a wonder we enjoy it so much. Evan thinks I am a bad luck charm, but I think it’s just our dumb luck.

- When we first “met” in Italy, our entire group, except Evan, lost our luggage for 3 days. We also were there for the hottest summer on record, and Italy does not have A/C.

- When we went to Austria the next summer, our flight to Paris was moved up 4 hours so we had to completely re-route our trip to Vienna. The ohnly incentive we got from the airline was an $8 food voucher which bought us a slice of pizza each. On the way back our first flight was delayed and we almost had to spend the night in Amsterdam (which doesn’t sound like such a bad deal to some people, but I was so ready to get home). We, ofcourse, lost our luggage due to the change in itinerary and got it back sometime the next day.

- On our honeymoon we had a direct flight to Ft. Lauderdale, where we were to board for our Caribbean cruise. Once we boarded we were told there were some “technical difficulties” that needed to be addressed before take off. The slight delay turned into our flight being cancelled and re-routing us through Atlanta and then to Ft. Lauderdale where we arrived only to find out luggage no where to be found. Shocker! I was sobbing so much the cruise agent gave us free transfers to the cruise ship….the wrong cruise ship. Luckily the driver was cool and took us to the correct ship where we were literally the last passengers to board, still unsure as to whether our luggage got on or if we would have to wear our lovely attire for 3 days. Luckily it did arrive and the rest of our honeymoon was smooth sailing.

So for this trip we are again taking a direct flight but I am packing two days worth of clothes with me! Though looking back on all of our “adventures” maybe the problem isn’t our dumb luck…but a far larger problem with today’s airlines?
